His musical career spans over 50 Ί ³ ³Ί years and he initially started as a boy by Ί ³ ³Ί playing trumpet and French horn. He then moved Ί ³ ³Ί onto bass and finally onto vocals. His first Ί ³ ³Ί record was released in 1958 and the rest, as Ί ³ ³Ί they say, is history. He was an accomplished Ί ³ ³Ί songwriter, producer and sang with Rainbow, Ί ³ ³Ί Black Sabbath, Heaven And Hell and also enjoyed Ί ³ ³Ί success with his own band Dio. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί He possessed a powerful, soaring voice with Ί ³ ³Ί vocal range that was fantastic both on record Ί ³ ³Ί and live. I could go on for hours about his Ί ³ ³Ί amazing voice but to put it simply he is, Ί ³ ³Ί without doubt, one of the best rock singers Ί ³ ³Ί every heard. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί On the 19th March UMC are releasing the first Ί ³ ³Ί three Dio albums ('Holy Diver', 'The Last In Ί ³ ³Ί Line' and 'Sacred Heart') as Deluxe Editions Ί ³ ³Ί with re-mastered original albums and a second CD Ί ³ ³Ί of other material. Very similar to the Black Ί ³ ³Ί Sabbath, Thin Lizzy and Def Leppard issues we Ί ³ ³Ί have already seen released. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί 'Sacred Heart', released in October 1985, was Ί ³ ³Ί the third album Dio released with his band and Ί ³ ³Ί consisted of Jimmy Bain (bass) Claude Schnell Ί ³ ³Ί (keyboards), Vinny Appice (drums) and Vivian Ί ³ ³Ί Campbell (guitar). This was Campbell's last Ί ³ ³Ί album with Dio, but more of that later. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Disc one is the original release re-mastered. Ί ³ ³Ί Arguably not the best of his 80s releases but Ί ³ ³Ί for me it is still one of the best albums of the Ί ³ ³Ί era. The album is full of Ronnie's trademarks - Ί ³ ³Ί strong melodies, fantastic vocals and lots of Ί ³ ³Ί references to Medieaval times. It also has some Ί ³ ³Ί great guitar work, solid rhythms and some Ί ³ ³Ί beautiful keyboard work intertwined to give the Ί ³ ³Ί songs that extra dimension. I'm not going to do Ί ³ ³Ί a track by track review as I think we all Ί ³ ³Ί probably owned the original vinyl or cassette Ί ³ ³Ί version and bought the CD when it came out. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί I was a little unsure if a remaster was really Ί ³ ³Ί worth the effort as I thought the original CD Ί ³ ³Ί version was good enough, however I was wrong. Ί ³ ³Ί The separation and clarity on Disc one is Ί ³ ³Ί fantastic. I compared it to my original CD and Ί ³ ³Ί right across the instruments it's clearer and Ί ³ ³Ί not quite as heavy on the bass end of the mix Ί ³ ³Ί making it a little brighter sounding, which I Ί ³ ³Ί prefer. The vocals sit better in the mix and the Ί ³ ³Ί backing vocals are clearer. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί The highlights of the remaster are exactly the Ί ³ ³Ί same as the original for me - the absolute Ί ³ ³Ί storming opener 'King Of Rock And Roll' followed Ί ³ ³Ί by 'Sacred Heart' and my all-time favourite Dio Ί ³ ³Ί song 'Rock And Roll Children'. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Disc two starts with 'Hide In The Rainbow' (Dio Ί ³ ³Ί EP), 'We Rock', 'Last In Line' (both Live B- Ί ³ ³Ί Sides - 'Rock N Roll Children') and 'Like the Ί ³ ³Ί Beat Of A Heart' (Live B-Side 'Hungry For Ί ³ ³Ί Heaven'). We then get the 'Intermission' album Ί ³ ³Ί in full. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί 'Intermission' was a live album released in Ί ³ ³Ί 1986. The live songs were recorded during the Ί ³ ³Ί first leg of the 'Sacred Heart' Tour. However Ί ³ ³Ί Campbell left the band after this first leg of Ί ³ ³Ί the tour for what I can only really describe as Ί ³ ³Ί 'musical differences!' The band enlisted Ί ³ ³Ί guitarist Craig Goldy for the rest of the tour Ί ³ ³Ί and for the next album 'Dream Evil'. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί On the 'Intermission' album Campbell plays the Ί ³ ³Ί live solos with Godly credited as doing "over- Ί ³ ³Ί dubbed rhythm guitar on the live tracks". In Ί ³ ³Ί addition, halfway through the live tracks is a Ί ³ ³Ί studio track ('Time To Burn') which was put on Ί ³ ³Ί as the band wanted something from the new line Ί ³ ³Ί up. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί I still feel the same about 'Intermission' now Ί ³ ³Ί as I did when it came out a cracking live album Ί ³ ³Ί spoilt by a studio track in the middle. The Ί ³ ³Ί studio track always spoilt the flow of the live Ί ³ ³Ί songs and it still does, at least now we have Ί ³ ³Ί the option to create a playlist and put it first Ί ³ ³Ί or last! Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί The live tracks capture Dio doing what he did Ί ³ ³Ί best - singing live. Stand out tracks for me are Ί ³ ³Ί 'Rock 'N' Roll Children'/'Long Live Rock 'N' Ί ³ ³Ί Roll'/'Man On The Silver Mountain' which are Ί ³ ³Ί really done as medley and show off Dio's voice Ί ³ ³Ί perfectly. The rest of the band sound excellent Ί ³ ³Ί and were pretty much at the top of their game at Ί ³ ³Ί this time with Campbell showing just how good he Ί ³ ³Ί would become and Appice/Bain holding the rhythm Ί ³ ³Ί rock solid. It's just a pity that we lose a lot Ί ³ ³Ί of the keyboards in the mix. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί I don't have 'Intermission' on CD so I couldn't Ί ³ ³Ί do a comparison with this new version. However I Ί ³ ³Ί suspect it has not been remastered as it still Ί ³ ³Ί sounds like a normal live album with very little Ί ³ ³Ί separation of the instruments and very little Ί ³ ³Ί keyboard coming through at times. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί As with a lot of these Deluxe releases there is Ί ³ ³Ί always the question, "should I buy it?" After Ί ³ ³Ί all we probably already have it at least once. Ί ³ ³Ί Personally I can be a bit cynical about these Ί ³ ³Ί releases but on this one I think it's worth Ί ³ ³Ί buying. The remastered original album sounds Ί ³ ³Ί great and the second CD is a real bonus, Ί ³ ³Ί especially if you have not got 'Intermission' on Ί ³ ³Ί CD already. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί In addition the release will have an expanded Ί ³ ³Ί booklet with notes from Malcolm Dome and it has Ί ³ ³Ί been endorsed by Ronnie's widow Wendy Dio.
