Between peforming in Ί ³ ³Ί W.E.T. and writing and producing for names like Ί ³ ³Ί Toby Hitchcock, Jimi Jamison and Adrenaline Ί ³ ³Ί Rush, he has made a big impact on the melodic Ί ³ ³Ί rock scene in the last few years. And then Ί ³ ³Ί there’s Eclipse, the band he fronts alongside Ί ³ ³Ί guitarist and songwriting partner Magnus Ί ³ ³Ί Henriksson. Their 2012 album Bleed and Scream is Ί ³ ³Ί arguably the decade’s best melodic rock album. Ί ³ ³Ί Now they’re back with their eagerly-anticipated Ί ³ ³Ί follow-up, titled Armageddonize. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί If for some reason you’re a fan of Swedish Ί ³ ³Ί melodic rock and haven’t heard this band (and if Ί ³ ³Ί so, what’s wrong with you?), Eclipse hits the Ί ³ ³Ί sweet spot between AOR and hard rock, with a Ί ³ ³Ί definite nod to the ’80s arena rocking heyday. Ί ³ ³Ί They have all of the melody and electricity of Ί ³ ³Ί bands like H.E.A.T. and Reckless Love, but with Ί ³ ³Ί a harder rocking crunch. Henriksson and Ί ³ ³Ί Martensson’s guitar work is right out front, so Ί ³ ³Ί there’s never any question whether Eclipse is Ί ³ ³Ί closer to pop than rock. Beyond his considerable Ί ³ ³Ί guitar playing, songwriting and producing Ί ³ ³Ί skills, Martensson is a hell of a singer as Ί ³ ³Ί well, and he gives a dynamite performance here. Ί ³ ³Ί The backing vocals are fantastic too, and add Ί ³ ³Ί even more power to the already catchy choruses Ί ³ ³Ί on Armageddonize. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί As to the album itself, Armegeddonize is very Ί ³ ³Ί much in the same style as Bleed and Scream. It Ί ³ ³Ί opens with a monster of a hard rock song called Ί ³ ³Ί “I Don’t Wanna Say I’m Sorry,” which immediately Ί ³ ³Ί grabs you by the throat. “The Storm” is probably Ί ³ ³Ί the catchiest song on the album, and the first Ί ³ ³Ί one that you’ll find yourself humming the melody Ί ³ ³Ί later. Not that there’s a non-catchy song to be Ί ³ ³Ί found here. Armageddonize is one hard-hitting, Ί ³ ³Ί extremely melodic song after another. “Wide Ί ³ ³Ί Open” and “Caught Up in the Rush” are classic Ί ³ ³Ί Eclipse (and could have made great W.E.T. songs Ί ³ ³Ί as well), and “Breakdown” sounds like a lost Ί ³ ³Ί Tangier or Junkyard track. Even the ballad “Live Ί ³ ³Ί Like I’m Dying” is powerful. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί So here’s the big question: Is Armageddonize Ί ³ ³Ί better than Bleed and Scream? Time and repeated Ί ³ ³Ί spins will tell, and rest assured you WILL be Ί ³ ³Ί playing this one many times in the months ahead. Ί ³ ³Ί Eclipse definitely didn’t take a step backwards Ί ³ ³Ί here. Armageddonize is an extremely strong Ί ³ ³Ί melodic rock album, and is an early favorite for Ί ³ ³Ί the best melodic rock album of 2015. It’s almost Ί ³ ³Ί unfair to ask other bands to follow this one. Ί ³ ³Ί Once again Eclipse has demonstrated why they Ί ³ ³Ί belong alongside H.E.A.T., Brother Firetribe and Ί ³ ³Ί W.E.T. as the elite names in modern melodic Ί ³ ³Ί rock.
