Label : Chrysalis Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³ΜΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΉ ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Description : Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Michael Schenker is pretty much known for three Ί ³ ³Ί things: being the dude who co-founded the Ί ³ ³Ί Scorpions, encompassing the virtues of raging Ί ³ ³Ί alcoholism and being a massive prick on-stage, Ί ³ ³Ί and writing the totally badass song/album Ί ³ ³Ί “Lights Out.” Schenker is not quite a legend in Ί ³ ³Ί the annals of rock history, although he probably Ί ³ ³Ί should be. Although prima-donna guitar players Ί ³ ³Ί are a dime a dozen and most of them can shred Ί ³ ³Ί when they feel like it, Schenker was a riff Ί ³ ³Ί monster and laid down some totally face-melting Ί ³ ³Ί solos. If more people outside of England had Ί ³ ³Ί actually heard “Lights Out,” UFO and Schenker Ί ³ ³Ί would be on the same household name recognition Ί ³ ³Ί level as fellow badass Phil Lynott. This isn’t Ί ³ ³Ί to say that UFO was as awesome as Thin Lizzy, Ί ³ ³Ί but there is a strong correlation between their Ί ³ ³Ί styles. Mainly, the style of big-time riffage, Ί ³ ³Ί catchy choruses, and a slight pop feel that was Ί ³ ³Ί still gritty enough to qualify as a manly Ί ³ ³Ί grilling album, as opposed to KISS, who employed Ί ³ ³Ί a similar style but had the misfortune of the Ί ³ ³Ί fact that 64% of their fans menstruate on a Ί ³ ³Ί monthly basis. Females don’t jam UFO or Thin Ί ³ ³Ί Lizzy, and therein lays the quintessential Ί ³ ³Ί difference. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί “Lights Out” the song is an exercise in titanic Ί ³ ³Ί guitar riffs and solos, and album opener “Too Ί ³ ³Ί Hot To Handle” is about 97% as awesome. The Ί ³ ³Ί remaining album is in a similar vein, with Ί ³ ³Ί layers of pop and big time power ballads thrown Ί ³ ³Ί in the mix. “Love To Love” is one of those 7 Ί ³ ³Ί minute ballads that consistently changes between Ί ³ ³Ί rocking out and getting sensitive, i.e. the Ί ³ ³Ί blueprint for any memorable classic rock ballad. Ί ³ ³Ί “Just Another Suicide,” “Getting Ready,” and Ί ³ ³Ί “Electric Phase” are pretty much Ί ³ ³Ί interchangeable, up-tempo riff rockers that Ί ³ ³Ί could have easily landed on 70’s rock radio. On Ί ³ ³Ί a record full of strengths that plays well to Ί ³ ³Ί its genre, the only points of weakness can be Ί ³ ³Ί found on “Try Me,” which is definitely not a Ί ³ ³Ί manly power ballad and thus is grossly out of Ί ³ ³Ί place, and “Alone Again Or,” which would be Ί ³ ³Ί better suited on an early Journey album. Those Ί ³ ³Ί tracks are the reason “Lights Out” is not quite Ί ³ ³Ί up to par as “Jailbreak,” yet its strongest Ί ³ ³Ί moments solidify it as an essential Hard Rock Ί ³ ³Ί staple.
