Label : Chrysalis Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³ΜΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΉ ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Description : Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Throughout the 70's UFO were slowly perfecting Ί ³ ³Ί their own individual brand of hard rock which Ί ³ ³Ί culminated in their peak period, both in terms Ί ³ ³Ί of quality and popularity, at around the time Ί ³ ³Ί their excellent double-live set 'Strangers In Ί ³ ³Ί The Night' was released. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί This particular album serves as an almost Ί ³ ³Ί perfectly logical musical stepping stone from Ί ³ ³Ί the rawer and more basic sounding 'Force It' to Ί ³ ³Ί the classic 'Lights Out'. The 'Lights Out' album Ί ³ ³Ί was probably the one where it all came together Ί ³ ³Ί and along with 'Obsession' marks the high point Ί ³ ³Ί of the band's studio work but there are plenty Ί ³ ³Ί of signs on 'No Heavy Petting' of what is to Ί ³ ³Ί come. The music itself could be accused of Ί ³ ³Ί slightly lacking the energy and committment Ί ³ ³Ί displayed on 'Force It' but the band are more Ί ³ ³Ί assured on here and sound a lot more mature than Ί ³ ³Ί on previous efforts. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Standard rocker 'Natural Thing' gets things Ί ³ ³Ί underway followed by the superb ballad 'I'm A Ί ³ ³Ί Loser' with it's trademark Michael Schenker Ί ³ ³Ί solo. These are the most well known tracks on Ί ³ ³Ί the album and became live favourites over the Ί ³ ³Ί years. Fans of hard rock sometimes give short Ί ³ ³Ί shrift to genre ballads but UFO virtually Ί ³ ³Ί perfected the art and delivered some of the best Ί ³ ³Ί examples of this oft maligned format; 'I'm A Ί ³ ³Ί Loser' is one of their best. However, the real Ί ³ ³Ί gems are to be found among the less well known Ί ³ ³Ί tracks. 'Can You Roll Her' is propelled along by Ί ³ ³Ί Danny Peyronnel on the keyboards with such Ί ³ ³Ί energy it's hard not to be caught up in the Ί ³ ³Ί sheer enthusiasm of it all and Schenker is again Ί ³ ³Ί on top form with a driving solo that suits the Ί ³ ³Ί song perfectly. 'Reasons Love' opens with a Ί ³ ³Ί typically electric Schenker riff and although Ί ³ ³Ί this isn't enough to save the song from dipping Ί ³ ³Ί into mediocrity there are indications of what is Ί ³ ³Ί to come in UFO's music in the way that Schenker Ί ³ ³Ί is so busy throughout the song adding fills and Ί ³ ³Ί little bursts of lead guitar throughout the Ί ³ ³Ί verses. The standout track is probably 'On with Ί ³ ³Ί the Action'. It is Pete Way's only songwriting Ί ³ ³Ί contribution, but what a contribution it is ! A Ί ³ ³Ί slow chugging slice of melodic heavy rock Ί ³ ³Ί featuring a great Schenker solo which should Ί ³ ³Ί have become a live staple. Album closer 'Martian Ί ³ ³Ί Landscape' with it's heavily tremeloed keyboard Ί ³ ³Ί intro is unlike anything else on the album and Ί ³ ³Ί tips a hat to the space-rock origins of the band Ί ³ ³Ί before developing into an entertaining little Ί ³ ³Ί song with a wonderfully catchy chorus. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί You may have noticed that the name 'Michael Ί ³ ³Ί Schenker'appears quite often throughout this Ί ³ ³Ί review. UFO were always capable of decent Ί ³ ³Ί songwriting and Phil Mogg at his best was a Ί ³ ³Ί great vocalist who contributed a lot to the Ί ³ ³Ί band's sound but Schenker is a lot more than Ί ³ ³Ί just the icing on the cake here. His influence Ί ³ ³Ί on this album cannot be underestimated and his Ί ³ ³Ί contributions rescue even the weaker tracks from Ί ³ ³Ί filler status. Ί ³ ³Ί If you fancy a bit of prime 70's hard rock with Ί ³ ³Ί melodic sensibilities alongside some classic Ί ³ ³Ί lead guitar work you could do a lot worse than Ί ³ ³Ί check out 'No Heavy Petting'.
