Label : Chrysalis Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³ΜΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΉ ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Description : Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί There is something quite different about this Ί ³ ³Ί album compared to UFO's previous releases, and Ί ³ ³Ί I'm not referring to the music. Hipgnosis had Ί ³ ³Ί been employed to provide cover art on every UFO Ί ³ ³Ί album from Phenomenon all the way through to Ί ³ ³Ί Lights Out and while some of the designs were Ί ³ ³Ί quite memorable none of them ever featured Ί ³ ³Ί pictures of the band. The cover art for Ί ³ ³Ί 'Obsession' is a typically weird Hipgnosis Ί ³ ³Ί affair with two guys in suits staring out at you Ί ³ ³Ί with what look like ballbearing's in their eyes Ί ³ ³Ί but...it's got a picture of Michael Schenker Ί ³ ³Ί too. Not the band, not Mogg and Schenker, just Ί ³ ³Ί the guitarist..on his own. It's almost as if the Ί ³ ³Ί band are saying 'hey, we are not just UFO we are Ί ³ ³Ί UFO featuring Michael Schenker, there he is Ί ³ ³Ί look, he's great isn't he, buy this and you can Ί ³ ³Ί hear him playing in UFO'. There could just as Ί ³ ³Ί likely be any number of reasons why he is on Ί ³ ³Ί there but whatever the motivations are behind Ί ³ ³Ί the cover art it's quite obvious that Schenker Ί ³ ³Ί was by now the most important member of the band Ί ³ ³Ί whether he was on the cover or not. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Schenker was important to UFO not just as their Ί ³ ³Ί resident guitar hero. He also formed the core Ί ³ ³Ί writing partnership with Phil Mogg which Ί ³ ³Ί produced most of the band's best work. To say Ί ³ ³Ί that the departure of Schenker after this Ί ³ ³Ί release left a hole in the band would be Ί ³ ³Ί something of an understatement. But I'm skipping Ί ³ ³Ί ahead here, he did contribute to 'Obsession' and Ί ³ ³Ί the album we have here is maybe not quite the Ί ³ ³Ί best thing UFO ever did but it's certainly the Ί ³ ³Ί most interesting. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Album opener 'Only You Can Rock Me' is a bog Ί ³ ³Ί standard UFO composition which wouldn't sound Ί ³ ³Ί out of place on any of their previous releases - Ί ³ ³Ί a mid-tempo hard rock number with a decent hook Ί ³ ³Ί and a melodic chorus. However, the band take Ί ³ ³Ί things up a notch with the vicious 'Pack It Up Ί ³ ³Ί And Go', an absolutely electric track with Andy Ί ³ ³Ί Parker pounding out the beat with brutal Ί ³ ³Ί precision and Mogg giving one of his best ever Ί ³ ³Ί vocal performances. UFO had never sounded so Ί ³ ³Ί downright committed as this before. Almost as an Ί ³ ³Ί apology for the subsequent minute of recorders Ί ³ ³Ί and a strummed guitar that is 'Arbory Hill' the Ί ³ ³Ί band launch into the excellent 'Ain't No Baby' Ί ³ ³Ί which manages to pack into 4 minutes virtually Ί ³ ³Ί all the elements that UFO became famous for - Ί ³ ³Ί tasteful slowburn hard rock, glorious melodies, Ί ³ ³Ί busy lead guitar and great solos. Another Ί ³ ³Ί highlight is 'One More For The Rodeo' on which Ί ³ ³Ί Schenker goes to town and almost drives the Ί ³ ³Ί whole song with endlessly inventive lead guitar Ί ³ ³Ί flourishes. Schenker was renowned for his Ί ³ ³Ί technical ability but there is no wankery on Ί ³ ³Ί here. The solos never outstay their welcome and Ί ³ ³Ί seem to fit within the framework of each song Ί ³ ³Ί perfectly. A proper UFO album usually has it's Ί ³ ³Ί fair share of ballads and 'Obsession' is no Ί ³ ³Ί exception. 'Cherry' is quite mediocre but Ί ³ ³Ί 'Looking Out for No.1' employs a string section Ί ³ ³Ί to great effect and album closer 'Born To Lose' Ί ³ ³Ί is beautiful in its simplicity while featuring Ί ³ ³Ί one of Schenker's best solos. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί 'Obsession' is by no means as straightforward Ί ³ ³Ί and consistent as the previous release 'Lights Ί ³ ³Ί Out' but there is an extra dimension to their Ί ³ ³Ί sound on here. It's altogether darker, more Ί ³ ³Ί atmospheric and definitely feels weightier than Ί ³ ³Ί anything they had ever done. Ί ³ ³Ί It's a shame that Schenker decided to quit the Ί ³ ³Ί band after this album. 'Obsession' finds UFO Ί ³ ³Ί moving away from their comfort zone in places Ί ³ ³Ί and it would have been interesting to see where Ί ³ ³Ί the Mogg/Schenker writing team would have gone Ί ³ ³Ί from here. I am pretty sure that whatever they Ί ³ ³Ί had produced would have been a cut above 'No Ί ³ ³Ί Place To Run' which turned out to be possibly Ί ³ ³Ί the weakest album UFO had released up until that Ί ³ ³Ί point and marked the start of the slow decline Ί ³ ³Ί of the band throughout the 80's.
