Ί ³ ³Ί Album : Sacrificium Label : Napalm Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³ΜΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΝΉ ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί Description : Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί A couple years ago a littler known symphonic Ί ³ ³Ί metal outfit hailing from Germany decided to put Ί ³ ³Ί Tuomas Holopainen on notice about a sound that Ί ³ ³Ί he'd long forgotten how to create. Then, about Ί ³ ³Ί as quickly as they had broken their own mold Ί ³ ³Ί with the powerful Neverworld's End, Xandria Ί ³ ³Ί seemed to be destined to an early fall with the Ί ³ ³Ί loss of their gifted dramatic soprano front Ί ³ ³Ί woman Manuela Kraller, reminiscent of the Ί ³ ³Ί similar fate that befell their inspiration Ί ³ ³Ί Nightwish back in the mid 2000s with the exit of Ί ³ ³Ί Tarja Turunen. However, history can prove to be Ί ³ ³Ί an invaluable teacher, and it appears that Marco Ί ³ ³Ί Heubaum was doing his homework as he didn't fall Ί ³ ³Ί into the trap of trying to revamp a working Ί ³ ³Ί formula and found another winning dramatic voice Ί ³ ³Ί in Dianne van Giersbergen, who is also quite Ί ³ ³Ί similar in vocal timbre and range to that of the Ί ³ ³Ί much emulated Tarja. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί For all the fairly different imagery depicted on Ί ³ ³Ί Sacrificium, this is an album that exemplifies Ί ³ ³Ί that age-old truism of not messing with a Ί ³ ³Ί winning formula. Naturally there has been some Ί ³ ³Ί tinkering around the edges in terms of the Ί ³ ³Ί album's flow and pacing, but the same stylistic Ί ³ ³Ί devices of simple driving guitar riffs, massive Ί ³ ³Ί orchestral sounds, and a well-balanced mixture Ί ³ ³Ί of haunting dissonance and somber beauty has Ί ³ ³Ί remained constant almost to a fault. Some of Ί ³ ³Ί this tinkering presents itself in a slightly Ί ³ ³Ί greater concentration of guitar elements that Ί ³ ³Ί point towards more of an Epica influence, though Ί ³ ³Ί Marco's riff approach still remains closer to Ί ³ ³Ί the support-role character of Emppu's work with Ί ³ ³Ί Nightwish rather than morphing into a galloping Ί ³ ³Ί semi-thrashing character befitting of Mark Ί ³ ³Ί Jansen. It's all a matter of degrees and this Ί ³ ³Ί still sticks pretty close to home. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί At first listen, there is a temptation to view Ί ³ ³Ί this album as being a bit more intense than its Ί ³ ³Ί predecessor, and there is some truth to this. On Ί ³ ³Ί the more extreme end of things on this album is Ί ³ ³Ί "Betrayer", which takes far further strides Ί ³ ³Ί towards thrashing it up in the riff department, Ί ³ ³Ί and even takes an occasion to throw in a nice Ί ³ ³Ί chaotic blast section, clearly eclipsing the Ί ³ ³Ί otherwise aggressive character of "Soulcrusher", Ί ³ ³Ί the equivalent song from the previous album. Ί ³ ³Ί Likewise, this album opens things up on a Ί ³ ³Ί particularly auspicious note with a massive 10 Ί ³ ³Ί minute plus epic of a title song, incorporating Ί ³ ³Ί the same sort of nuanced interplay between piano Ί ³ ³Ί driven balladry and rapid paced symphonic power Ί ³ ³Ί metal majesty that would go with a classic Ί ³ ³Ί Nightwish epic such as "Beauty Of The Beast" and Ί ³ ³Ί "FantasMic", but presented in a manner more Ί ³ ³Ί along the lines of a darker, heavier anthem off Ί ³ ³Ί of Once. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί If there is a way of truly differentiating this Ί ³ ³Ί album from its predecessor, it would be by Ί ³ ³Ί taking note of the heavier degree of power metal Ί ³ ³Ί elements at play than before, to the point of Ί ³ ³Ί mirroring what was heard on Wishmaster and Ί ³ ³Ί Decipher. Particularly when noting the heavier Ί ³ ³Ί degree of more driving, up tempo numbers like Ί ³ ³Ί "Until The End", "Stardust", and "Little Red Ί ³ ³Ί Relish", all of which almost want to cross over Ί ³ ³Ί into Rhapsody Of Fire territory and definitely Ί ³ ³Ί point to that wondrous marriage of Danny Elfman Ί ³ ³Ί styled lullaby symphonic devices with up tempo Ί ³ ³Ί metallic cruising. Be this as it may, there are Ί ³ ³Ί still plenty of nods to the same sort of mid Ί ³ ³Ί 2000s character that was all over Neverworld's Ί ³ ³Ί End, with the most obvious example being the Ί ³ ³Ί down-tempo homage to Nightwish's "Nemo" that is Ί ³ ³Ί "Dreamkeeper", which actually manages to be a Ί ³ ³Ί bit more formulaic and catchy than the former, Ί ³ ³Ί yet also better given the superior production Ί ³ ³Ί job and balance of instruments into a more Ί ³ ³Ί harmonious whole. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί In spite of losing a very charismatic and Ί ³ ³Ί competent lead vocalist, Xandria have actually Ί ³ ³Ί managed to maintain their hold on musical Ί ³ ³Ί greatness here and also proved that provided a Ί ³ ³Ί similar sound is maintained, that it's the Ί ³ ³Ί compositional element that truly makes or breaks Ί ³ ³Ί a band. This is the sort of album that will find Ί ³ ³Ί an all too welcoming home amongst fans of female Ί ³ ³Ί fronted symphonic metal, and is actually a cut Ί ³ ³Ί above most of what's been coming out of the Ί ³ ³Ί older guard in the past few years. The jury is Ί ³ ³Ί still out on what kind of sound Nightwish will Ί ³ ³Ί come up with having Floor Jansen at the helm, Ί ³ ³Ί but if they want to get some good ideas about Ί ³ ³Ί where to aim, they would be advised to look Ί ³ ³Ί where Xandria has been for the past 2 years.
