These Ί ³ ³Ί warriors were destined for glory, and they Ί ³ ³Ί always would be. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί They were born to rule, and so they did, for Ί ³ ³Ί more than a decade. Lighting the Templar flame Ί ³ ³Ί high above the clouds, they faced many Ί ³ ³Ί challenges, and when steel met steel these brave Ί ³ ³Ί paladins conquered all with an unforgiving Ί ³ ³Ί blade, riding the storm with the crimson thunder Ί ³ ³Ί through the thresholds of time. Blood bound, Ί ³ ³Ί they seemed unstoppable and reached the end of Ί ³ ³Ί the rainbow with their hearts on fire, ready for Ί ³ ³Ί anything. Rosιn and Elmgren, two of the best and Ί ³ ³Ί most noble warriors of them all, were injured in Ί ³ ³Ί battle and decided to part ways with their Ί ³ ³Ί brothers, leaving the alliance fragile. Larsson, Ί ³ ³Ί one of the first Templars, returned to help Ί ³ ³Ί their brothers and Norgren, proficient axeman Ί ³ ³Ί and wizard of sound, stepped in for the Ί ³ ³Ί charismatic Elmgren. But one day, it all seemed Ί ³ ³Ί strange, like there was something missing; they Ί ³ ³Ί kept going using any means necessary to do so, Ί ³ ³Ί but something had infected them. Their guardian, Ί ³ ³Ί Hector, was equally affected and had to step out Ί ³ ³Ί of battle to recover. Battered and bruised, they Ί ³ ³Ί paused the eternal search for the spirit of true Ί ³ ³Ί heavy metal and retired themselves to meditate Ί ³ ³Ί and heal. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί And then, one winter later, the Templars got Ί ³ ³Ί together once again in the spirit of revolution, Ί ³ ³Ί hoping for a powerful return to origins. A Ί ³ ³Ί little rusted, they managed to perform better Ί ³ ³Ί than their last battles, but this new endeavor Ί ³ ³Ί was just a way for them to detoxify from all the Ί ³ ³Ί bad omens that were haunting the crusade. This Ί ³ ³Ί time, though, they will prove once again that Ί ³ ³Ί the Templars of steel were ‘Built to Last’; Ί ³ ³Ί their swords are sharper, their minds are Ί ³ ³Ί clearer and their hammers are high. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί One of the most beloved and prominent bands of Ί ³ ³Ί the new generation of metal is back with full Ί ³ ³Ί force. Hammerfall will release their 10th full Ί ³ ³Ί length album on November 4th - first one via Ί ³ ³Ί Napalm Records -, completing their return to Ί ³ ³Ί form started with ´(r)Evolution’ in 2014. Ί ³ ³Ί Longtime buddies Joacim Cans and Oscar Dronjak Ί ³ ³Ί lead the way once again to an album that will Ί ³ ³Ί restore your hope in the band and put Hammerfall Ί ³ ³Ί in a place where they never should have left. Ί ³ ³Ί Starting strong with “Bring It!”, the band Ί ³ ³Ί destroys any skepticism you might have in the Ί ³ ³Ί first chords, with Grave Digger-esque guitar Ί ³ ³Ί lines and a powerful and pumped chorus. The song Ί ³ ³Ί lifts up the spirits and paves the way to other Ί ³ ³Ί two great tracks: “Hammer High” and “The Sacred Ί ³ ³Ί Vow”, previously released as a lyric video; Ί ³ ³Ί “Hammer High” is an absolute anthem of epic Ί ³ ³Ί proportions. The very beginning of the song Ί ³ ³Ί makes you want to raise your fist and bang your Ί ³ ³Ί head, singing along with the characteristic Ί ³ ³Ί Hammerfall choir. This is one of those songs Ί ³ ³Ί that you know are going to be perfect live, and Ί ³ ³Ί will definitely become perennial. “The Sacred Ί ³ ³Ί Vow” is a little bit like “Hector’s Hymn” in Ί ³ ³Ί terms of sounding like a classic, but actually Ί ³ ³Ί missing something else. It is a great and catchy Ί ³ ³Ί song with some quotes of old Hammerfall tunes Ί ³ ³Ί like “Steel Meets Steel” and “Heeding the Call” Ί ³ ³Ί - which is a form of writing that I like very Ί ³ ³Ί much - and has one of the simplest, yet most Ί ³ ³Ί magnificent part of a song I’ve heard from these Ί ³ ³Ί guys in years: ‘fear the sound of metal, the Ί ³ ³Ί sweetest sound of all’. Perfect. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί “Dethrone and Defy” speeds up the album and Ί ³ ³Ί reminisces some of the denser vibes of the band, Ί ³ ³Ί maybe something between what we’ve seen in Ί ³ ³Ί ‘Crimson Thunder’ and ‘Threshold’. Riff-driven, Ί ³ ³Ί the track maintains the good quality of the Ί ³ ³Ί album. The ballad “Twilight Princess” comes Ί ³ ³Ί next, and it’s absolutely gorgeuous: starting Ί ³ ³Ί with just an acoustic guitar and Joacim Cans’ Ί ³ ³Ί voice, the sound builds itself into an emotional Ί ³ ³Ί and magical journey to a sad story. Without Ί ³ ³Ί exaggeration, this stands as tall as classic Ί ³ ³Ί ballads by the band such as “Always Will Be”, Ί ³ ³Ί “Remember Yesterday”. It’s obviously not as good Ί ³ ³Ί as the transcendental “Glory to the Brave”, but Ί ³ ³Ί you get the idea. “Stormbreaker” shows the Ί ³ ³Ί traditional vein so beloved in Hammerfall’s Ί ³ ³Ί sound, with a marvelous riff and a sped-up Ί ³ ³Ί chorus. “Built to Last” is yet another of those Ί ³ ³Ί ‘fists up high’ tunes with a cadenced Ί ³ ³Ί construction; this song could be easily featured Ί ³ ³Ί in ‘Crimson Thunder’. “The Star of Home” is a Ί ³ ³Ί faster track with glimpses of power metal, being Ί ³ ³Ί one of the happier songs of the album. Joacim Ί ³ ³Ί delivers a great performance here, especially at Ί ³ ³Ί the chorus, proving that almost 20 years of Ί ³ ³Ί activity haven’t hurt his pipes at all. And then Ί ³ ³Ί comes “New Breed”; A clear homage to the sound Ί ³ ³Ί of Accept, illustrated by the guitar lines and Ί ³ ³Ί atmosphere, especially, the song is an ode to Ί ³ ³Ί every metal band out there. Please, please, hear Ί ³ ³Ί this song as much as you can and absorb the Ί ³ ³Ί message: young or old, classic or modern, the Ί ³ ³Ί bands and the fans are all the same in the heavy Ί ³ ³Ί metal community and all of us support the same Ί ³ ³Ί ideas and culture. Closing the album is “Second Ί ³ ³Ί to None”, the most epic song of the bunch. Is Ί ³ ³Ί slowly builds from a ballad to the darker song Ί ³ ³Ί featured in the album, relying heavily in Ί ³ ³Ί keyboard arrangements and Joacim’s voice. Ί ³ ³Ί Ί ³ ³Ί As you can see, the Templars of steel rise from Ί ³ ³Ί the darkness and slay their demons once and for Ί ³ ³Ί all with ‘Built to Last’. Clearly a return to Ί ³ ³Ί the classic sound, the band successfully Ί ³ ³Ί gathered all the missing elements we loved so Ί ³ ³Ί much from the first records and, allied to a Ί ³ ³Ί refreshing sensation and the joy to play music Ί ³ ³Ί by the band members, turned this into a very, Ί ³ ³Ί very good heavy metal album, well worthy of the Ί ³ ³Ί Hammerfall name. If you are used to reading my Ί ³ ³Ί reviews, you know that I don’t just give away Ί ³ ³Ί high ratings, so believe me, ‘Built to Last’ Ί ³ ³Ί deserved every point here. So grab your swords Ί ³ ³Ί and shields, join the Swedish Templars in yet Ί ³ ³Ί another crusade to reach heavy metal supremacy Ί ³ ³Ί and let the hammer fall.
