The Beach Boys sind eine der weltweit erfolgreichsten Pop- und Rockbands der 1960er und fr�hen 1970er Jahre. Sie wurden 1961 von den Br�dern Brian, Dennis und Carl Wilson, ihrem Cousin Mike Love und dem Schulfreund Alan Jardine im kalifornischen Hawthorne gegr�ndet. Bis Mitte der 1960er Jahre verbuchte die Band mit Surfmusik zahlreiche Charterfolge.

Besondere Merkmale ihrer Musik sind einpr�gsame Melodien und ein differenzierter, h�ufig vierstimmiger Chorsatz unter Verwendung teilweise ungew�hnlicher Harmoniefolgen. Ihre Texte beschworen anf�nglich meist Teenagersehns�chte nach einem hedonistisch orientierten und sorgenfreien Leben, thematisierten sp�ter aber auch ernsthafte und problematische Felder. Mit ihrem experimentellen Album [i]Pet Sounds[/i], das laut Fachzeitschriften wie Mojo und Rolling Stone zu den bedeutendsten Alben in der Geschichte der Rockmusik z�hlt, und den Arbeiten am Album [i]Smile[/i] erneuerten sie teilweise die damaligen Strukturen der Rock- und Popmusik und erweiterten deren musikalische Ausdrucksm�glichkeiten.

W�hrend ihr Erfolg in den Vereinigten Staaten ab 1967 langsam schwand, konnten die Beach Boys in Europa ihre gr��ten Erfolge feiern, bis sie 1974 mit dem Compilation-Album [i]Endless Summer[/i] auch in ihrer Heimat wieder erfolgreicher waren. 1988 kam mit Kokomo ein weiterer Nummer-eins-Erfolg hinzu. Die Gruppe war insgesamt �ber 50 Jahre lang in den Top 40 der amerikanischen Billboard-Charts vertreten.

1983 starb Dennis Wilson und 1998 Carl Wilson. Die drei verbliebenen Gr�ndungsmitglieder gingen in der Folgezeit separat mit verschiedenen Begleitbands auf Tournee. 2012 fanden sie wieder zusammen, ver�ffentlichten ein neues Studioalbum und gingen auf eine Welttournee

A few years ago, I would've snatched this set up the day that it was released. The $120 asking price proved daunting, so I ended up passing until it hit $80. Received it a few days ago, and now feel that I got MUCH more than $80 worth out of this release. The music, the packaging ... amazing. It is like a book that you cannot put down. I've heard 90% of this music, but it's worth it for the outtakes, alternate mixes, etc. The packaging is amazing. Great book, format and photos. Not entirely happy with the mastering, but I'll live. Perfect set for hardcore fans and newcomers. Play anyone Disc 3 and I defy them to not become a BB fan. Cool to hear the Smile mixes that were on the GV set years ago. Also wish that they didn't dabble with the later Paley recordings and include the single version of Isn't It Time, which is a mess and ruins a latter day classic. Overall, it is amazing music. What a freaking group.
