[img(width=316 height=60)]links/images/splogo.jpg[/img] Die 1974 in Kingston, Jamaika gegründete Band Black Uhuru zählt zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern des Roots Reggae der zweiten Generation. Das Wort Uhuru ist der ostafrikanischen Sprache Swahili entlehnt und bedeutet Freiheit. Ihre erfolgreichste Zeit hatten Black Uhuru in den 1980er Jahren. Das Vokaltrio bestand aus Duckie Simpson, Michael Rose sowie Puma Jones, einer aus South Carolina stammenden Sozialarbeiterin, die mit ihrem hohen Sopran zum charakteristischen Sound der Band beitrug. Unterstützt wurden sie von der kraftvollen Rhythmusgruppe Sly & Robbie mit Sly Dunbar am Schlagzeug und Robbie Shakespeare am Bass sowie weiteren von Jamaikas begehrtesten Instrumentalisten. Sly Dunbar und Robbie Shakespeare produzierten auch die bekanntesten Singles, General Penitentiary, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Plastic Smile, Abortion und Shine Eye Gal. If you love dub music like I do, you must own this album. This is one of the top 10 dub albums ever. Although credited to the vocal group Black Uhuru, this is really the work of Sly and Robbie along with mixer Paul "Groucho" Smykle. Most of the tracks come from (with the curious exception of one) the 2 classic Black Uhuru albums - "Red" and "Chill Out". Vocal snippets are kept in most of the tracks to give each re-mix an otherworldly feel to it. This album was a breakthrough in dub as it was considered one of the first "electronic" dub albums ever. Now approaching its 30th year, this album is still a milestone for dub.
