Ihr Stil ist beeinflusst von Soul, Funk, Motown, afrikanischen Elementen (Kalimba) und modernen Pop-Rhythmen, die sie in den christlichen Gemeinden ihrer Umgebung sammelten. Im Besonderen wurden sie bekannt durch ihre starke Bläsergruppe - die Phenix Horns. Ein markantes Merkmal ihres Sounds ist der Falsett-Gesang ihres Sängers Philip Bailey aus Denver, der kurz nach Veröffentlichung des ersten Albums zur Gruppe stieß. Im Disco-Zeitalter erreichten sie mit den Grammy-Award-Alben All'N'All (1977) und I Am - (1979) ihren Höhepunkt. Von diesen Alben wurden alleine acht Lieder zu Top-Hits und standen auf den vordersten Plätzen in den R&B-Charts. While it lacks in productional value, it makes up for in rawness, creativity, and complexity. This album exhibits a sound of innocence which builds into the climactic song Power. A song that manifests numerous styles in a way that ties it all together. After Power the songs start to wind down, yet continue to evoke a sense of nostalgia. Remember the Children and Mom are both emotionally powerful tunes. Not only is the album good, but something about good cover art just really makes a great album all the more complete.
