Rock

Founded in London, UK in 1981 - Hiatus between 1986-1989 - Still active. ASIA were formed by Steve HOWE (YES), John WETTON (KING CRIMSON, URIAH HEEP, UK ETC.), Geoff DOWNES (YES, BUGGLES) and Carl PALMER (ELP). They were of course immediately dubbed a "supergroup" (in the way as CREAM, EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER etc. were). Over the years the line up has gone through constant changes, with DOWNES being the only founding member still present (although even he has not been ever present). In terms of prog rock, the music is light-weight, with only occasion forays into slightly more complex song structures. The songs are generally short, but are of a very high quality, with a distinctive sound, and fine melodies.

John Payne war von 1992 bis 2006 Leads�nger und Bassist der englischen Rockband Asia. Seit Mai 2007 vermarktet Payne seine Arbeiten mit Asia (und mit GPS) unter dem Namen "Asia featuring John Payne".

This is a nice album. It's a covers-album by the John Payne-led version of Asia (Jay Schellen, Erik Norlander, John Payne himself and a variety of guitarists, on this album Bruce Bouillett and Moni Scaria)
Not the standard songs to cover and some sound really fresh. I especially like that John and Erik pay hommage to forgotten bands like Barclay James Harvest, Camel, Alan Parsons Project and UK, next to well-known bands like Yes, King Crimson and Jethro Tull.
Payne is an excellent vocalist, maybe one of the best of his generation. Erik likes to play a million keyboards at once, wich makes this release very colourful.
Maybe not anyone will like the rasping voice of John, but somehow it just works. For instance: Court of the Crimson King and Higways of the Sun sound more rock than they ever did.
