Fronted by Tom Johnston from 1970 to 1975, and Michael McDonald 1975- 1982. The group officially split in 1982 but re-formed in 1987 with Johnston resuming the lead. They have released 13 albums. Their 1973's "Long Train Runnin'", "Black Water" as well as "What a Fool Believes", "Minute by Minute" are considered all time classics. They sound a lot hotter & more rocking on this album than they did on their debut, & the rhythm section sounds & feels stronger, not to mention Tiran Porter is a much funkier bass player than Dave Shogren was & the combo of him & Hossack help to anchor what had been a somewhat shaky rhythm section initially.. Plus Porter's husky baritone voice gives their trademark harmonies a richer, fuller sound. The songwriting is far stronger as well, with obvious hit singles "Listen To The Music" & "Rockin' Down The Highway" just two of the treats here. There's Pat's gorgeous title track & Tom's short but sweet & beautifully sung "White Sun" with superb harmony singing. Add in the Allman Brothers-ish jam of Tom's "Disciple", & Pat's fun "Mamaloi" & things just get better. Finally, toss in two great covers, Seals & Croft's "Cottonmouth" & the great "Jesus Is Just Alright", (another hit for the Doobies), & you get an album that has stood the test of time.
