There's not a weak track or stumble here. Replacing original lead guitarist Jeff Cease with the more talented Marc Ford, & adding a full time keyboardist in the criminally overlooked Eddie Harsch not only expands their sonic palette, but gives them room to stretch out & explore their creativity even more. Just the first four songs in a row overwhelm the listener with their strengths, & the rest of the album follows suit. Their influences are still plain to see, but, some of them are a bit different than on Shake Your Money Maker. There's less of a Stones vibe, but far more of a Faces groove, with a loose limbered approach to the material. Said looseness, (especially from the rhythm section), also brings to mind Little Feat, as drummer Steve Gorman begins to sound & feel a lot like a cross between Feat drummer Richie Hayward & Stones drummer Charlie Watts, giving the songs both a strong backbeat & an appealing sloppiness. The rhythm section also swings even more than on their first album, making music you can dance to. There's also even more of a Southern Rock feel & influence here, with sonic nods to the Allman Brothers &, somewhat surprisingly, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Hotel Illness has a lot of that feel in it, especially when the acoustic slide guitar comes slinking in on the second verse, which gives us a real Skynyrd touch, that the electric solo afterwards makes even stronger. The call & response vocals with the female background singers on many tracks, such as Black Moon Creeping, really intensifies that Skynyrd feel. With only one song clocking in under four minutes, & that at 3:59, they take the opportunity to find all the nuances in the songs, & achieve the perfect balance between solid song structure & stretching out the jamming just the right amount, in part because the songs are indeed solid, providing the right basis for jamming. Later albums had the jamming, but too often without the strong base to take off from. An essential album for any Rock fan. [color=#FF0000]1. "Sting Me" 4:39 2. "Remedy" 5:22 3.
