Gegründet von Glady im zarten Alter von 14 schlossen sich ihr großer Bruder Merald "Bubba" Knight, ihre Schwester Brenda Knight, sowie ihr Cousin und ihre Cousine William und Elenor Guest der Gruppe an. Der größte Hit der Gruppe war "Midnight Train to Georgia". The final album on Columbia for Gladys Knight & The Pips did reasonably well, getting them three chart hits, but it didn't include any of the anthemic R&B or pop crossover songs they had been landing in the '80s.
