Single Shine, Tangerine Dream, Soundtrack Legend, Dream Theater, Album Systematic Chaos, Peter Machajdík, Album Namah, Toto, Album The Seventh One, Soundtrack Metropolis, Soundtrack St. Elmos Fire, Glass Hammer, Album Culture Of Ascent u. a. m. In the City of Angels is the fifth solo album by Yes lead singer Jon Anderson. Jon recorded this album in Los Angeles and Hollywood, thus the title. Unlike most of Anderson's previous solo works, this album contains many additional songwriters. Consequently, it is the most straight-ahead commercial pop album in his oeuvre. Members of the band Toto perform on several songs. Paul Robicheau of The Boston Globe wrote a mixed review, referring to the album as "Jon goes to Hollywood". He criticized Anderson's "smarmy lyrics" and the album's commercial production, likening the album's sound to Toto. Robicheau singled out the track "Hold On To Love" as having a "perky appeal" and noted the "interesting rhythm" on "Sundancing". Robicheau concluded his review by writing "this is a record you can both love and hate." A very commercially orientated, and largely disappointing album by the Yes man. Released in 1988 (between "Big Generator" and "Union" in Yes terms) the album features many of the now dated electronic sounds of the period. It's interesting that the album bears more than passing similarities to the solo work of Phil Collins, including some funky rhythms and brass backing. While Collins made the mistake of imposing those influences on Genesis, Anderson retained his credibility by hiding such sounds away Anderson is a fine vocalist in the Yes environment, but his vocals sound completely out of place on this sort of music.
