Dynamite is the third and last collaborative album between labelmates The Supremes and The Four Tops, released on the Motown label in 1971. It was as commercially unsuccessful as The Magnificent 7 (1970) and The Return of the Magnificent Seven (1971), peaking at the lower hundreds of the Billboard Top 200, but contained as many good duets as those two discs. The album fared much better on the Billboard R&B charts, peaking at 21.
By 1972, both the Supremes and the Four Tops had seen better days. The former group had suffered greatly with the departure of Diana Ross, while the latter had never bounced back from the departure of Motown's crack writing and production trio, Holland-Dozier-Holland. As such, I figured DYNAMITE would fail, by a wide margin, to live up to its name.
But I was pleasantly surprised. Nine of these ten tracks really appealed to me! (I don't like "If" by anyone, up to and including Bread.) They injected Perry Como's MOR smash, "It's Impossible," with even more soul than New Birth had. The septet also delivered credible covers of the familiar hits "Hello Stranger" (Barbara Lewis), "Love the One You're With" (Stephen Stills), "If I Could Build My Whole World Around You" (Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell), and "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream" (Aretha Franklin). Then there's "Melodie," the strongest track here.
As arguably the greatest singer in Motown history, Levi Stubbs virtually carried this album on his own. (Not to slight the other Tops, but much of the time they're pushed far down in the mix.) If DYNAMITE were only by the Supremes, it would have been much weaker.
