Founded in 1994. Symphony X's music includes complex timings and odd meters while incorporating elements of heavy metal and progressive rock. Their early albums in particular contain strong neo-classical elements reminiscent of Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, and others. The band have been categorized as progressive metal, power metal, and neoclassical metal, though the band themselves dislike genre labels with Romeo stating they can be "misleading sometimes ... at the core of it all we're a metal band". Symphony X is often compared to other progressive metal bands such as Dream Theater, Fates Warning, and Shadow Gallery. ''Symphony X'' does really sound symphonic at times. Mostly the interplay between lead and backing vocals are giving this mood. Of course, the typical ''wall of sound'' so many times heard in this genre is well present, but when it is mixed with less conventional (which here means melodic) elements Dominated by the powerful guitar riffs from Michael Romeo: he gives the cue; but the powerful backing rhythmic section is rather efficient as well. ''Symphony X'' is mixing again melody and metal music and to be honest, the combination works quite well. Metal freaks should also be pleased since the pace is quite sustained.
