Karn hat sich seine Instrumente selbst beigebracht. Er startete mit dem Bassoon, nachdem es gestohlen wurde kaufte er einen Bass und erlernte das Spiel damit. Zu dieser Zeit traf er David Batt (Sylvian). Sie gründeten Japan. Bei Japan spielte er auch die Windinstruments, einschließlich Saxofon. Sein Bassspiel war sehr markant, ungewöhnlich, da er sich um keine Konventionen kümmerte. Er starb 20011 an Krebs. Mick Karn's latest release is a densely complex and richly rewarding effort from one of the most intriguing, original yet primarily unsung bass gods of our time. His fretless bass sounds round, fat, slippery and elastic, as it always has and should be, for this is what makes him unique. Synth waves that sound surreal, distort, become morose (depending on the song), and instrumental tracks that breathe well, swell and decay, morph and expire eerily. Of course, his bass clarinet and other horns he adorns his cd's with are studio-treated and processed nicely, adding an almost Mingus-on-acid feel while his thick bass slithers and spirals over, under and within each tune.
