Pointer scored several moderate solo hits after leaving the Pointers in 1977, including a disco cover of the Elgins' "Heaven Must Have Sent You" which became a U.S. top 20 pop hit on September 1, 1979. Due to ten years of alcoholic liver disease and cirrhosis, Pointer died at her home in Los Angeles on June 8, 2020, at the age of 69. Bonnie Pointer (red) is the debut studio album by Bonnie Pointer, released in 1978 on the Motown label. For Bonnie Pointer's first LP on Motown, producer/hubby Jeffery Bowen brought some new songs to the sessions this time. The most exciting, "Free Me from My Freedom," has a perky rhythm that's accented by a bubbly bass. Smokey Robinson's "When I'm Gone" works better than the other Motown oldies.
