Reggae

Die 1974 in Kingston, Jamaika gegr�ndete Band Black Uhuru z�hlt zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern des Roots Reggae der zweiten Generation. Das Wort Uhuru ist der ostafrikanischen Sprache Swahili entlehnt und bedeutet Freiheit.
Ihre erfolgreichste Zeit hatten Black Uhuru in den 1980er Jahren. Das Vokaltrio bestand aus Duckie Simpson, Michael Rose sowie Puma Jones, einer aus South Carolina stammenden Sozialarbeiterin, die mit ihrem hohen Sopran zum charakteristischen Sound der Band beitrug. Unterst�tzt wurden sie von der kraftvollen Rhythmusgruppe Sly & Robbie mit Sly Dunbar am Schlagzeug und Robbie Shakespeare am Bass sowie weiteren von Jamaikas begehrtesten Instrumentalisten. Sly Dunbar und Robbie Shakespeare produzierten auch die bekanntesten Singles, General Penitentiary, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Plastic Smile, Abortion und Shine Eye Gal.

It's not exactly roots music, a couple of songs are a bit sweet and syruppy, warm well recorded excursion into Reggae & Pop. This LP establishes Black Uhuru as the ultimate (if not only) synth-reggae crew. A heavy reliance on digital trickery adopted while under the guidance of Sly and Robbie is still present, though arguably not as effective as in the band's Island Records era. Highlights include the strangely titled "Dreadlock Pall Bearers" (which is nothing more than a re-recording of the band's own "Time to Unite" from its first album of the late '70s) and "Living in the City." Simpson and crew prove here that, in a reggae world diluted with liberal doses of sex and violence, there is still a voice of reason.
