Er startete seine Karriere als Sänger von Tubeway Army. Nach zwei Platten startete Gary mit Pleasure Principle 1979 seine Solokarriere. Bekannt wurde er mit "Are 'Friends' Electric?" und "Cars", in den 1970ern und frühen 80ern. Numans Musik wird dominiert von schweren synthesizer hooks und dem Einsatz der Gitarreneffekte, er gilt als einer der Pioniere der kommerziellen elektronischen Musik. Intruder is the nineteenth studio album by English musician Gary Numan. One reviewer called Intruder "one of the finest albums of his career", NME describing the album as "fresh and ambitious" and "thrillingly relevant", and another citing it as one of Numan's "most interesting albums". Paste magazine said "the bracing new climate-change-conscious Intruder-is sketching clear charcoal renderings of the charnel house that awaits us".
