The group's greatest fame came during the early 1970s. The group was formed at Hyde Park High School in Chicago in the late 1950s as the Chanteurs (Eugene Record, Robert "Squirrel" Lester, and Clarence Johnson). They later teamed up with Marshall Thompson and Creadel "Red" Jones of the Desideros to form the Hi-lites. Noting that the name Hi-lites was already in use, and wishing to add a tribute to their home town of Chicago, they changed their name to "The Chi-Lites" in 1964. An obscure later album by The Chi-Lites -- a mix of smooth modern soul styles, very different than the usual southern soul grooves you'd expect from the Excello label. The group's in fine form harmony-wise, and the best cuts feature some mellow stripped-down production that's sort of an update of the hits of earlier years. Titles include "The Only One for Me", "We're Right For Each Other", "Love Your Way Through", "You Won't Be Lonely For Long", "Stay A Little Longer", "All My Life", and "Getting Back At You".
