January 16, 2012) was an American funk, R&B, and soul musician. A multi-instrumentalist, he is credited with vocals, saxophone and composition. He is best known for songs such as "It's Just Begun", "Bertha Butt Boogie", and the biggest hit single, million-seller "Troglodyte (Cave Man)." Many of the group's tunes have been heavily sampled in films and in hip-hop. In particular, the saxophone hook and groove from the title track of It's Just Begun. For example Ice-T sampled the track for the title track of his 1988 album Power.[ Castor's final Atlantic album is also the best he made for them. All the six first tracks are solid funk tracks of good quality and much variation. The first two are standard Castor dance tracks, good but a bit predictable. "Equal people" and "Mind power" are "positive lifestyle" tracks like the ones on "It's just begun", but isn't the lyrics even better here? "TR-7" and the heavy blues "Magnolia" are fully or mostly instrumental, and really good! Then we get "The return of Leroy", which is not so interesting but in demand with Castor's fans, and the end of the record are less memorable soft tracks. All in all, a very good record with many solid tracks. It might have been even better if it had been more in the earlier "jungle funk", but when it was made, disco was at its peak so we must forgive Castor for leaning towards it.
