Krautrock


Can war eine 1968 in Köln gegründete avantgardistische Band, und bewegte sie sich musikalisch zwischen Free Jazz, Avantgarde-Jazz und innovativen Krautrock- und Psychedelic-Rock-Elementen. Can gilt international als eine der innovativsten Bands aus Deutschland. Ihr entscheidender Beitrag zur Musikgeschichte liegt darin, dass sie wie keine andere Band eine von der klassischen Liedstruktur unabhängige Ästhetik repetitiver Klangkompositionen entwickelte. Damit sind Can richtungsweisend für die Musik der 1970er, 1980er und 1990er Jahre. So beriefen sich beispielsweise Punkbands (wie z.B. die Buzzcocks) auf Can. Weitreichende Akzeptanz gab
es im Bereich des Post-Punk und Independent (z.B. Sonic Youth, Radiohead, The Mars Volta und The Fall). Durch den minimalistischen Einsatz elektronischer Instrumente, klassisch minimalistische Drumsets und die typischen repetitiven Songstrukturen wurden Can zu Urvätern der elektronischen Tanz- und Unterhaltungsmusik. Neben den Einstürzenden Neubauten, Kraftwerk und den Scorpions zählen Can zu den weltweit erfolgreichsten und bekanntesten deutschen Bands.


Five years after its release this Can box just gets better and better. Lots of deep listening, I keep turning up new things to listen to and delight in. Great for hardcore Canheads. The Malcolm Mooney tracks showcase just how out-there he was, using his voice akin to a sampler or tape loop, just press 'repeat'. Virtually every track in the set sheds new light on the Can back catalogue with proto versions of Can classics, for instance - Vitamin C (Dead Pigeon Suite) and Mother Sky (On the Way To....).
The live tracks are good too and seem to be better quality than some other live releases I've heard (like the CD that came with the Can Box which I was never that impressed by).
Niggles are tiny - I might not have put on Godzilla Frgment which is too short and truncated to be of much interest. Apart from that this is all great stuff.
