Soul The 5th Dimension is an American vocal group. Their music encompasses sunshine pop, pop soul, and psychedelic soul. Formed as the Versatiles in late 1965, the group changed its name to "the 5th Dimension" by 1966. Between 1967 and 1973 they charted with 20 top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, two of which - "Up, Up and Away" (no. 7, 1967) and the 1969 number one "Medley: Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In (The Flesh Failures)" - won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year. This album bears the name of the 5th Dimension, but there was little inherent in the program or performances that could remind one of the group at its zenith. Only two of the five original members (Florence LaRue Gordon and Lamonte McLemore) remained in the line up. That being said, the album is pretty good and stands on its own. The songs are solid, if ultimately lacking the commercial hook that AM radio demanded. The title song was co-written by Lionel Richie, and other songs were written by Ashford and Simpson, Tom Baird and Dino Fekaris, and Lou Courtney (the lead singer and the guy at the driver's wheel in the photo). The tracks were produced, or co-produced by Marc Gordon and Hal Davis, and studio musicians included stalwarts like Harold Battiste, Steve Porcaro, and James Jamerson, Jr. While not a commercial smash, this album holds up and is worth hearing.
